release date: 23 of February 2020
After the Meltdown, the second album by Peter Rylén’s Trio, with Kresten Osgood on drums and Casper Nyvang Rask on double bass, which will be released on CD and streaming on 23 February 2020 is not your usual session here: planned, rehearsed and put into the score. Neither is the trio itself, which doesn’t exist on the regular basis in real life. The Trio is a connection of Soulmates in music who are all enjoying playing together and that’s all that matters.
In July 2016 they recorded together for the first time and this debut record, self-produced by the pianist’s own Petter Records. “The first album we made” – recons Petter, “Petter Jazz, was with jazz standards and jazz songs I wrote, and we rehearsed for that 3 or 4 times. Apart from this I think we had only played one show at Mandagsklubben 5E in Copenhagen”
In January 2017, Petter, who lived in Nigeria at the time, travelled to Copenhagen to play a three hour live performance in Sauna Recording Studio with Kresten and Casper. ” Only four people showed up to the concert, which at first seemed like a big failure, but turned out to make it an even more intimate and close affair. It’s easier to hide in front of a large crowd than in front of four people… ” – concludes Petter.
” For this After the Meltdown recording, I think both Kresten and Casper came to the session thinking we would play jazz standards again, but I wanted to raise the stakes for myself and do something entirely different – says Petter. ” It felt like a great challenge for me to take away all the plans and not know what was going to happen at all, especially since playing with Kresten and Casper was a really big deal for me, Kresten had been one of my biggest idols for a long time… – (he) continues confessing. ” I could feel improvising was the right thing to do, because at this time I was so worried it wouldn’t work out at all, and that’s when it gets so exciting to throw myself right into it! “
The session resulted in the album’s five songs, which Petter is now proudly sharing as his first CD.
A release celebration concert with the trio will take place at Mandagsklubben in Copenhagen on the 2 March at 19.00. The concert will be live streamed on Twitch. On the day of the release, 23 February at 18.00, Petter will be inviting the public to his house in Newport, Wales, where he will be playing solo piano accompanied by live drawing from the album art illustrator George Goom.
