Guitarist/Composer Owen Chen releases new EP titled “Eternal”
About the Recording:
Eternal represents the variety of sonic influences that Owen Chen grew up with, combined with the New York language of modern and traditional jazz of his later years. Inspired by film and anime music that evokes memories of the multiple stages of a hero’s journey, each composition reflects a different idea and soundscape of the progression of a story’s arc. Solana Beach captures the warmth and the calmness of the San Diego beach hometown that Owen grew up in. Avalanche reflects the progressive rock influences that propel the hero into the challenges that lie ahead. Infinity is influenced by the diversity of sounds and cultures that expanded Owen’s musical ear in New York City, and Eternal showcases a cinematic theme of finality and resolution.
The EP is brought to life by Owen’s colleagues at New York University, with Joshua Roberts on drums, Sukyung Kim on Piano, Sunhyun Yoo on Alto Sax, and Sean Hannon on the Upright Bass.

About Owen Chen:
Owen Chen is a jazz guitarist based in New York City. He holds a Masters in Jazz Performance at NYU, and an undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley, having studied privately with mentors including Peter Bernstein, John Scofield, Adam Rogers, Ari Hoenig, Alex Sipiagin and more. Classically trained at age of 5, Owen started his musical journey on the violin. In 2022, he released his debut album titled “Eternal” with his quintet. Owen is actively bandleading at residencies in New York City at venues such as The Red Pavilion, Laissez Faire, Bar Next Door, along with actively performing with the Victor Lin Studio Ghibli Sextet with a repertoire of anime inspired jazz arrangements. Owen’s artistic influences as an arranger, composer, and performer in his live performances combine a range of sounds rooted in cinematic soundtracks, anime music, progressive rock, combined with modern and traditional jazz language
