ICP News! Han Book Launch & Exhibition Opening/NL Concerts/Norway, UK and Ireland Tours.

Posted On 4th October 2017 By grzech In All That Jazz /

Dear All. Here are the latest news from our dearest friends from ICP.

ICP is just back from a glorious tour of Colombia, where we played for some wonderfully enthusiastic (and large: see photo above) audiences.  Now we’re equally thrilled to move on to more domestic matters: first, we have a few shows in Nederland:

Friday, October 6th at 20.30: De Doelen, Rotterdam
Saturday, October 7th at 20.30: Paradox, Tilburg
Sunday, October 8th at 15.00: Museum Kranenburgh, Bergen

The last of these, Sunday, October 8th: the Kranenburgh Museum in Bergen, NL will open a unique exhibition of Han’s creative output, featuring a “total artwork”  that unites music, rhythm, organization and visual art. Drawings, photographs, installations and collages come together in an exhibition developed by book designer Irma Boom. The afternoon will also feature a 45-minute performance by the ICP Orchestra.

In addition to opening Han’s exhibition, October 8th will mark the official release of HAN BENnInK, a retrospective in book form of Han’s visual art through the years, designed and bound by master bookbinder Irma Boom.

Celebrating both 50 years of the group, and also Han Bennink’s 75th birthday, the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) is a unique and internationally renowned collective of Dutch composer-improviser-instrumentalists formed in 1967 by Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker.

Over the years, the ever-evolving orchestra has collaborated with many giants of the experimental music world. Their current line-up consists of ten of the most innovative musical voices from around the globe, including ICP co-founder Han Bennink – one of the most in demand drummers in Europe, saxophonists/clarinettists Michael Moore, Ab Baars and trombonist Wolter Wierbos.

The exact programme is always a surprise, as the band decides just a few minutes before the performance what they will be playing. From ragtime to swing, bop to free jazz, classical to carnival, the ICP Orchestra continues to be at the forefront of experimental music. Nothing else sounds quite like them and no two gigs are ever alike.

“The Instant Composers Pool Orchestra, from Amsterdam…they are scholars and physical comedians, critics and joy-spreaders.” New York Times
